KDF 55 Media Helps Remove Chlorine, Algae, Bacteria and Iron From Water

KDF media has demonstrated excellent performance in water treatment, especially in the removal of residual chlorine, algae, bacteria and iron from water. KDF, or Kinetic Degradation Fluxion, is a high-purity copper-zinc alloy particle that is widely used in water purification cartridge configurations.

KDF consists of two different metals. When in contact with water, the positive copper in the alloy becomes the cathode and the negative zinc is the anode, where a reduction reaction occurs at the cathode and an oxidation reaction at the anode. Zinc is oxidized by chlorine in the reaction and loses electrons, generating divalent zinc into solution, hydrogen ions in the solution gain electrons, and hydrogen and hypochlorous acid are reduced to chloride ions and water, with the following chemical reaction formula: Zn+HOCl+H2O+2e-Zn2++Cl-+H++2OH-. Through this reaction, KDF can effectively remove residual chlorine from water.

In addition to the residual chlorine removal effect, KDF also effectively removes organic pollutants such as algae and bacteria from the water. The zinc released by KDF is able to disrupt the cellular structure of bacteria and inhibit their growth and reproduction, thus safeguarding the safety of water.

KDF treatment media can also remove heavy metal ions from water, such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, cadmium, arsenic, antimony and many other soluble heavy metal ions, and their removal is accomplished through electrochemical redox reactions and catalysis.

The mechanism of heavy metal ion removal by KDF55 is as follows: metal ions are plated on the surface of the KDF treatment medium or enter the KDF lattice, thus binding toxic heavy metal pollutants to the KDF. For example, dissolved lead ions in water are reduced to insoluble lead atoms and plated on the surface of the KDF media;  It was found by the X-ray diffraction studies that mercury is removed by the formation of a copper-mercury alloy.

The chemical reaction formula for KDF treatment of heavy metal ions is as follows:

Zn/Cu/Zn+Pb(NO3)2 Zn/Cu/Pb + Zn(NO3)2

Zn/Cu/Zn+HgCl2 Zn/Cu/Hg+ ZnCl2

The benefits of KDF process media lie not only in its efficient removal capabilities, but also in its durability and economy.KDF Filter media is less susceptible to contamination, provides consistently high water treatment efficiency, and consumes less. At the same time, KDF process media prevents the formation and accumulation of mineral hard scale and protects the bath filter assembly from residual chlorine, microorganisms, and scaling.

KDF process media is used in a wide range of applications, from household kitchen faucets to industrial cooling water treatment, and has demonstrated its excellent water purification capabilities. In home water purifiers, KDF media works synergistically with other filtration media, such as activated carbon, to provide a more comprehensive water purification solution that ensures the safety and health of home water.
